Chinese Language and Culture Program
The Chinese Language
and Culture program is presented in partnership with CSU Chico's
College of Humanities and Fine Arts (HFA) starting this fall semester.
The program is the result of two years of planning, grant-writing, and
implementation by Joel Zimbelman, Dean of HFA, and Frank Li, Director of
CSU's Honors Program. Financial support from the Chinese government
for The Chinese Language and Culture Community Outreach Program of about
$100,000 made it possible for Chico State to expand the community
outreach program to two local elementary schools, namely, Shasta
Elementary and Sierra View Elementary starting this fall semester.
Margaret Mow has played a key role in helping us set up the expansion of
Chico State's outreach program to include the two schools.
The motivation behind partnering up with Chico State to offer this program is
quite straightforward. First, we share Professor Li's and Dean
Zimbelman's conviction that such a program will produce long-term and
significant benefits to our students in light of the much changed world
of the 21st century in which China is playing an increasingly important
role. Second, learning Chinese and gaining a basic knowledge of the
Chinese cultural heritage will give the students a competitive edge in
the rapidly globalizing world in which China is one of the most
prominent emerging economic powers. Third, it has been abundantly
demonstrated that exposing children to other cultures and languages at a
young age not only enriches their learning experience but enhances
their cognitive and educational growth and development as well. In
short, this should be a valuable opportunity for our students.
